A URL redirect is a function of a webserver which facilitates the sending of a user from one URL to another. Redirects will usually take the form of an automated redirect which relies on one of a series of status codes defined within the HTTP protocol. There are many types of redirects available including server side scripts, JavaScript, frame redirects, metatag refreshes and 3xx series status codes. Web users might be redirected from one URL to another for different reasons including the merging of two websites, directing content to a recently uploaded domain, changing a business name, landing page split testing for marketing purposes, or other reasons particular to the web site owner.
