A sitemap can be a graphical representation or it could be in the form of a document that lists the pages on the site. Sitemaps are put together in an hierarchical manner.

The two most popular versions of sitemaps are XML sitemaps, which are structured in a format that a user does not need to see but which tells the search engine the information about the pages in a site and their importance to one another. HTML sitemaps are also designed for the user to help find content on the page and doesn't need to include all subpages.
